There's A Lot To Celebrate At Eastlands This Christmas!

Post by: Eastlands Estate, 07 Dec 2020

There’s no doubt 2020 has been a challenging year, but at Eastlands, we believe in the power of finishing strong!

We’re very grateful that families are allowed to visit over the festive period, and we’re looking forward to hearing the cheerful sounds of grandchildren’s laughter all over the Estate.

And while we’re all looking forward to a happier 2021, there’s still a lot we can do to make sure we have a wonderful holiday season.

Christmas Crafts

If you’re fortunate enough to be having family coming to visit, we thought it might be fun for them (and you) to have a few festive activities lined up for those times when you need something quiet and calm to do!

Baking
This is always a winner, and at this time of year, gingerbread people are a great idea. Or you can make star-shaped or snowflake-shaped cookies to hang on the tree (or eat!)

Here’s a quick and easy recipe for you to try:

Melt 175g dark muscovado sugar, 85g golden syrup and 100g butter in a saucepan, then bubble for 1-2 mins. Leave to cool for about 10 mins.

Tip 350g cake flour, 1tsp of bicarb, 1 tbsp ground ginger and 1tsp cinnamon into a bowl. Add the warm syrup mixture and 1 beaten egg. Mix until everything comes together then knead in the bowl until streak free.

Wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

Remove the dough from the fridge and leave to soften enough so you can roll it out. Roll to about 2-3mm thick and cut out into shapes – people, cookies, snowflakes etc. Bake in a preheated 200C oven (180C fan) for 8-10 mins.

Leave to cool on the tray for 5 mins, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Decorate and enjoy!

Crafts
There are so many great crafting activities you can do at this time of year. Paper chains are always popular – buy prepared strips with adhesive you just have to lick and stick or make your own from whatever paper you have lying around.

Everyone loves to get a homemade Christmas card, so try cutting out pictures from last year’s cards or those bits of Christmas wrapping paper you have lying around that are too small to wrap anything in! Then stick them onto cardboard and write personalised messages.

And here’s a really fun thing to do with young visitors – make popcorn tinsel! Kids love making “real” (done in a pot on the stove and not in a bag in the microwave) popcorn and you can then use it to thread onto long strings to lace around the Christmas tree, or string up as a decoration in your home.

Christmas Happenings Around The Estate

Festive Food
Our traditional Christmas Day lunch is once again one of the highlights of the festive season. Families are always welcome to come and enjoy a delicious meal with our residents – no cooking or washing up required!

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, we won’t be serving a buffet-style lunch this year, but our talented on-site chefs are pulling out all the stops to make sure Christmas lunch is still something truly special.

We’ve had a sneak peek at the menu and it’s safe to say mouths are already watering! A choice of delicious starters, including chicken liver pate, snails with blue cheese, and the ever-popular avocado Ritz. The main meal features traditional roast meats with ALL the trimmings! Plus, of course, a trio of decadent desserts. All for just R375 per adult, and half-price for children under 12. (Booking is essential)

Christmas Birthdays
We have three Eastlands residents who celebrate their birthdays on Christmas Day! So happy festive season birthday wishes to Norma Denton, Raymond Baldwin, and Peter Marais!

Final Thoughts

If you’re fortunate enough to be spending Christmas with your family and grandchildren, we at Eastlands Mature Lifestyle Estate wish you and your loved ones a very blessed, safe, and happy holiday.

We also know that it’s not always possible to get together with our loved ones – especially at the moment. But we always make sure that everyone at Eastlands is catered for, and we have a  range of activities for all those residents who find themselves home alone this festive season. Pilates, lawn bowls, water aerobics, social clubs…and much more.

We’d love to show you everything we have to offer, so click here to book your personalised tour of Eastlands Mature Lifestyle Estate. We look forward to welcoming you.
