Home for the holidays? At Eastlands, home is where the (happy) heart is

Post by: Eastlands Estate, 06 Dec 2018

The festive season is such a busy time of the year – putting up the tree, decorating your home, buying presents, wrapping presents, parties, braais…the festivities seem endless.

Well, that is if you are part of a busy family unit with young children or a large social circle that pulls out all the stops to celebrate the season. However for many others, especially seniors, it can be a lonely time.

It is not uncommon for older people to feel sad or even mildly depressed around the festive season. It is a well-documented fact overseas, especially in America and European countries where the festive season is a major celebration, that elderly people suffer from higher rates of depression at this time of the year.

Although a lot of this ‘seasonal sadness’ comes from these countries being in the thick of winter in December, experts agree that the memories older people have of their own happy holidays as children are the most common triggers for festive sadness and depression.

All the resources we canvassed in researching this article showed that the best way for older people to cope with the holiday blues is to get involved with all the aspects they loved most about the holidays. That means decorating their own homes, attending festive events, and of course, choosing, wrapping and giving special gifts.

The one aspect that makes all this possible, is the opportunity to live in your own home in a safe community of like-minded people where you can share in the spirit of the festive season.

At Eastlands, that is exactly what we offer: a community of people just like you who too may be alone for the holidays, but who are able to connect with other people and celebrate this special time of the year. There is always something going on at Eastlands, so you are never alone or short of things to do!

Want to take a peek at how our residents celebrate the holidays? Here’s our checklist for a fantastic festive season:

  • Get decorating: You’re free to decorate your home as you wish (tenants with the permission of their landlords, of course). At Eastlands, our estate Christmas tree is also up, so you get to enjoy the festive spirit even if you don’t want a tree in your own home.
  • Join the festive fun: Eastland residents come together for a festive movie evening out on the patio overlooking the bowling green and dairy farm, as well as our annual Christmas party, where gifts are handed out by Father Christmas to residents’ grandchildren. This year our movie night features The Grinch Who Stole Christmas on the big screen, and includes popcorn and a drink for just R30 per person.
  • Go watch a Christmas panto or ballet: These are much-loved holiday events that you can easily enjoy as an Eastlands resident, as we are located a stone’s throw from major centres on the East Rand. The famous festive ballet, The Nutcracker, for example, is being performed by the Royal Ballet and broadcast in a special screening at the Nebula Micro Theatre these holidays right here in Benoni.
  • Spoil yourself: A haircut, mani or pedi are all sure-fire ways to lift your spirits and get ready for any holiday visitors. At Eastlands, you don’t even need to leave the property to treat yourself to these quick pick-me-uppers; our onsite salon and nail bar have got you covered!
  • Soak up the summer sun: While too much sun can be dangerous, a little time spent outdoors is good for the soul. Our sunny December holidays (no white Christmas here!) combined with the easy-to-navigate walking trails through beautiful indigenous gardens at Eastlands are the perfect combination for outdoor therapy.
  • Get active! One of the features our residents love most about Eastlands is our Lifestyle Centre. Here you can enjoy the balmy days with heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools, jukskei and our brand new bowling green, which just opened its doors in time for the holidays.

Of course, outside of the holidays we also have tons for our residents to do, including lawn bowls; water aerobics; bridge; Monday night bingo evenings; Pilates; events such as outdoor movie nights, braai days, beer festivals, markets and potjie competitions held throughout the year, as well as the chance to join our many social clubs, such as our knitting and garden clubs.

Can you see yourself spending your next festive season as part of the Eastlands community? We can too!
