Active ageing in the spotlight as Eastlands' Lifestyle Centre opens

Post by: Eastlands Estate, 20 Aug 2017

The East Rand’s retirement community received a significant boost this week when Eastlands Mature Lifestyle Estate officially opened its highly anticipated Lifestyle Centre.

As a next-generation residential estate for active, young at heart seniors, we are pioneering the concepts of ‘ageing in place’ and ‘active ageing’ in South Africa.

Our brand new Lifestyle Centre brings these concepts to life for our residents through a range of high quality lifestyle, and health and wellness facilities.

Members of the public are invited to personally view these facilities during our upcoming open weekend, to be held on Saturday, 26 August 2017 and Sunday, 27 August 2017 from 8am to 5pm.

Plus all buyers purchasing a unit at Eastlands Mature Lifestyle Estate before the end of August qualify for a R5 000 landscaping voucher for their new home!

The biggest drawcard of our new Lifestyle Centre is undoubtedly our world-class Healthcare and Wellness Centre, which is operated by Geratec, the only full-service provider of outsourced services to long-term care facilities and retirement homes and estates in South Africa.

Rayne Stroebel, MD of Geratec, says the Healthcare and Wellness Centre promotes ‘ageing in place’ by providing a safe, comfortable space for residents to use as they age and their needs change.

“Instead of having to uproot residents as their care needs evolve and move them to an entirely new location – an often traumatic exercise for elderly people – the centre allows residents to seamlessly move from their own homes on the estate to the assisted living suites and then if necessary, to the frail care centre. This approach, which is in line with current global trends in ageing, puts people first, moving decision-making closer to the aged themselves. It’s a much more humane and compassionate way to help elderly people navigate these often difficult transitions,” explains Stroebel.

The Healthcare and Wellness Centre features six dedicated assisted living suites that offer professional homecare services, as well as a 16-bed frail care centre that provides 24-hour frail care. These facilities prioritise patients’ individual needs, both medical and personal, and provide individual care programmes to ensure the highest standards of personalised care. A resident doctor, physiotherapist and pharmacist complete the specialist healthcare line-up.

In addition to these state-of-the-art facilities, the Lifestyle Centre also features several amenities geared towards ‘active ageing’. That is, they have been specifically designed to optimise opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance our residents’ quality of life as they age.

“We refer to these as our lifestyle facilities, as they really do aim to promote a healthy, balanced lifestyle for residents. These facilities include a heated indoor pool and two outdoor pools; a bowling green and jukskei field; vegetable allotments; carpentry and metalwork workshops; boardroom; restaurant, coffee lounge; hairdresser and beautician; and a large communal braai area. Over and above the wellbeing aspect, these facilities strengthen the sense of community at Eastlands,” adds Stroebel.

For residents’ convenience, the Lifestyle Centre also features a small store stocking everyday items and groceries; three boutique hotel-style rooms for overnighting family and friends; and a shuttle service.
